Vultures near Conowingo Dam may be dying of bird flu
Harford County, Maryland — A recent increase in vulture carcasses near Conowingo Dam may have been caused by avian flu, prompting authorities to temporarily close part of the park’s trails and parking lot. Now
Constellation Energy, which owns the facility, has announced it will be closing portions of its Wildflower Trail at Fisherman’s Park in Harford County to prevent the spread of the virus. A similar temporary trail closure took place last year, according to Constellation.
Black vulture corpses were collected by state officials in March near the entrance to Fisherman’s Park, mostly near the first lookout hut and near the trailhead of the Wildflower Trail. No dead birds were found near the fishing pier or Konowingo Dam.
Maryland Department of Agriculture spokeswoman Jessica Hackett said federal and state governments are working together to address the rising black vulture deaths at Conowingo Dam, “due to the cannibalistic nature of birds.” It cuts off the reinfection cycle that occurs.
Carcasses collected in March were tested by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and found to be possibly infected with H5N1 Avian Influenza (HPAI).
The bird was sent to a national laboratory for further examination. Constellation said it is working with state and federal agencies to protect the public and wild birds at Fisherman’s Park.
