Spreading awareness about food allergies in children
The death of 3-year-old Elijah Silvera in 2017 rocked the city. He had an allergic reaction to a grilled cheese sandwich served in a program sponsored by Harlem’s Department of Child Welfare.
His parents said it was well known and documented that he had a severe dairy allergy.
They took their suffering, turned it into a purpose, established the Elijah Aravi Foundation, and passed the Elijah Law. The measure requires all day care programs in the state to follow guidelines and training on food allergy prevention and management.
His mother, Dina Hawthorne, appeared on Wellness Monday’s “News All Day” corner to talk about her efforts to prevent this tragedy from happening again.
Hawthorne argues that parents should consult a pediatrician and ask how they can get their child tested for food allergies. If you’re sending your child to daycare, don’t be afraid to be a nuisance and ask lots of questions, such as, “How do you protect your child in the facility?”
