Colorado reports first human plague since 2015
According to national health officials, the person was infected with septic plague earlier this summer and then recovered.
Denver — According to the Colorado Department of Health and Environment (CDPHE), people in Colorado were infected with plague for the first time in five years.
Authorities said people they had not identified were infected with septic plague earlier this summer and then recovered.
This type of plague is in the blood and does not spread to other people. Authorities also said the person had contacted a sick squirrel.

Most recently, Squirrel tested positive for plague in Jefferson County, and CDPHE reminds the population that plague is not uncommon during this time. According to CDPHE, the risk of human infection is very low, as long as some simple precautions are taken.
It includes the following:
- Do not handle wildlife directly
- Keep pets away from wildlife, especially dead rodents and rabbits
- Do not let dogs or cats hunt prairie dogs, other rodents, rabbits
- Do not allow pets to roam freely
- Treat all pets for fleas according to veterinary advice
- Do not feed wildlife. This attracts wildlife to your property, makes intimate contact and increases the risk of disease transmission.
- Be aware of rodent and rabbit populations in your area and report sudden deaths or multiple dead animals to your local health department.
“The plague has been present in Colorado since at least the 1940s, and cases of wild rodents in Colorado have been reported most of the year,” said state public health veterinarian Dr. Jennifer House.
“While most plague activity is seen during the summer, the disease is found all year round in rodents and occasionally spills on other wildlife species and domestic cats and dogs.”
The plague was found in animals in restricted access areas in Adams and Bloomfield counties this summer.
Plague is most commonly transmitted to humans by the bites of infected fleas, but it can also be transmitted by the tissues, fluids, or respiratory droplets of infected animals. People who are directly exposed to fleas and wildlife in the affected areas may be at risk.
If you believe you have been exposed, contact your healthcare provider immediately. Symptoms include sudden fever, headache, chills, weakness, and tender, painful lymph nodes.
There is no publicly available vaccine to prevent plague in people, but if detected early, it can be successfully treated with antibiotics in both people and pets.
