CDC Commission Recommends Adults Age 65 and Older to Get RSV Vaccine
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is one step closer to recommending an RSV vaccine for adults 65 and older.
The agency’s vaccine advisory panel voted 9-2 this week to recommend vaccinations for older adults. CDC directors will now consider this recommendation before deciding whether the product can be administered broadly.
RSV usually peaks in winter. In a healthy person, the virus usually presents as a mild cold that may take him a week or two to recover. However, the CDC reports that more than 120,000 adults over the age of 65 are hospitalized each year with respiratory viruses, resulting in 6,000 to 10,000 deaths.

Health officials say older people with weakened immune systems and chronic heart and lung disease are more likely to have serious consequences.

Alexby’s clinical trials involving 12,500 participants are still ongoing, but the FDA approved the vaccine after analyzing its efficacy through the latest RSV season.
Health officials said those who got the vaccine had a 94% lower risk of severe illness.
RSV is also a major health concern for infants and young children. The CDC notes that 80,000 children under the age of five are hospitalized with respiratory syncytial virus each year. There are still no approved vaccines to prevent the disease in children.
