A research team at Harvard TH Chan Public Health School in Boston investigated the incidence of esophageal and gastric cancer in 98,459 women and 49,685 men over 20 years.
The results show that during the 22-28 year follow-up, there were 199 cases of esophageal cancer and 238 cases of gastric cancer.
The study found that a history of periodontal disease was associated with an increased risk of 43% and 52% for esophageal and gastric cancers, respectively.
The risk of esophageal and gastric cancer was slightly higher in those who had more than one tooth compared to those who had no teeth, 42% and 33%, respectively.
Those who have a history of periodontal disease and may lose one or more teeth are equal to a 59% increased risk of esophageal cancer compared to those who have no history of periodontal disease and no tooth loss. The researchers said it was related.
Similarly, studies found that the risk of gastric cancer was 50% and 68% higher in the same group.
The link between bacteria commonly found in the mouth (such as Tannerella forsythia and Porphyromonas gingivalis) and esophageal cancer was made by other scientists in previous studies.
Another possible reason is that poor oral hygiene and periodontal disease can promote the formation of bacteria known to cause gastric cancer, scientists said.
The authors noted that previous findings regarding the relationship between periodontal disease and tooth loss and esophageal and gastric cancer were inconsistent.
