Scientists develop blood test to detect cancer “a few years before symptoms appear”
Scientists say they have developed a new blood test that can detect five common types of cancer “a few years ago” when symptoms appear.

Scientists analyzed plasma samples from 605 people who had no cancer in the study, and 191 of the participants were later diagnosed with the disease.

Next, scientists developed a test that could detect cancer in 95% of participants who were asymptomatic of the disease when the sample was collected and were later diagnosed with cancer.
The study also found cancer in 88% of the samples from 113 participants who were already diagnosed with the disease.
Research results have shown that this test can be used to help identify patients at high risk of developing cancer, but results need to be validated on a larger scale.
Professor Kung Zhang of the University of California, San Diego and one of the authors of the study said: “The ultimate goal is to have these blood tests done regularly at each health checkup.
“But the immediate focus is to test higher risk people based on family history, age, or other known risk factors.”
How does the test work?
Blood-based screening tests have become more common in recent scientific studies because they provide a way to evaluate patients with cancer without the need for invasive surgery.
The test identifies signs of cancer based on a small amount of tumor DNA that may be circulating in the blood, allowing the disease to be detected even before symptoms occur.
The test can also correctly identify healthy samples 95% of the time.
