PTSD Therapy Does Not Cause Drug Recurrence in Addiction Patients: Study
Small new study Monday 27th July 2020 (HealthDay News)-Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) talk therapy does not seem to increase the risk of relapse in addicted patients.
About a quarter of people with disabilities in using drugs and alcohol also have PTSD, usually due to traumatic or stressful life events such as combat or rape.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy is the primary treatment for PTSD, but some providers are reluctant to use it in addicts. Concern is that thinking and talking about traumatic events can cause relapses of drugs and alcohol.
However, this study clarified the concept and showed that the severity and emotional problems of PTSD were reduced after the first treatment session.
“There is evidence that treatment of PTSD does not affect recovery and patients can request treatment and provide mental health care,” said research author Jessica Pais, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins University. In this study, her team assessed changes in craving of 44 patients for opioids or other drugs, self-reported days of drug use, and mental health before and after initiation of talk therapy.
