A new article in the American Heart Association’s journal Stroke shows that patients admitted with Covid-19 have a lower risk of stroke.
A new paper published in Stroke, a journal of the American Heart Association, shows inpatients have a lower risk of stroke COVID-19.. These findings came after the first report suggested a significant risk of stroke in patients hospitalized for Covid-19. This study was conducted by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
Among the suffering patients, the majority had pre-existing risk factors such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
To assess the risk and incidence of stroke in hospitalized Covid-19 patients, the researchers found 844 Covid patients admitted to the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, Pensvitarian Medical Center, and Pennsylvania Hospital from March to May. -19 patient data were analyzed. The team also analyzed data from cases of intracranial hemorrhage (intracerebral hemorrhage).
The researchers found that 2.4% of patients had an ischemic stroke. It is the most common type of stroke and is usually caused by a blood clot in the brain. Importantly, the majority of these stroke patients had existing risk factors such as hypertension (95%) and a history of diabetes (60%), as well as traditional stroke mechanisms such as heart failure.
In addition, more than one-third had a history of previous strokes.
“At first there was concern about stroke associated with Covid-19, but it has not been substantiated. Importantly, patients with Covid-19 have a lower risk of stroke, but it is mainly associated with existing conditions. So the doctor who saw a stroke in a hospitalized Covid-19 patient needs to understand that the virus is not the only factor, said senior author Brett Kucchiara in a statement.
“But there are still many unknowns and the association between stroke and Covid-19 needs to be investigated. In particular, the racial disparities surrounding the disease need to be considered.”
The researchers say the results suggest that these cerebrovascular events in hospitalized Covid-19 patients are probably related to pre-existing conditions rather than the only consequences of the virus. However, other factors may be affecting and require ongoing investigation.
