IDPH has declared the measles outbreak in northeastern Illinois over with no new cases since April.

The outbreak, which began on March 7 with 67 reported cases, has been contained with no new cases reported for more than 42 days. The majority of the cases are linked to a newcomers shelter in Chicago, with cases subsequently reported in suburban Cook, DuPage, Lake and Will counties.
Collaboration among state and local health departments, including IDPH, the Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS), and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA), was critical in managing this outbreak. Efforts included activating emerging infectious disease response funds to support DHS-run isolation hotel shelters in Chicago to help isolate vulnerable populations. Additionally, IDPH expanded laboratory capacity for rapid measles testing and coordinated education sessions to promote vaccinations and awareness.
The state expedited contact tracing, reorganized large events to minimize the risk of super-spreader events, and provided on-site clinical support and infection control assessments at evacuation centers and quarantine sites. IDPH vaccine teams also worked to ramp up vaccine supply, developed a school vaccine dashboard to guide local vaccination efforts, and ensured new school-aged students were vaccinated quickly.
IDPH emphasizes the importance of vaccination, noting that one dose of the MMR vaccine is 93% effective against measles, and two doses are 97% effective. Vaccination rates have declined since the COVID-19 pandemic, increasing the risk of vaccine-preventable diseases.
