“The No. 1 excuse is, 'I don't have time,' and I'm in good health,” said Dr. Will Dixon, medical director of Care New England's Family Care Center in Pawtucket, who says he's heard it all.
What he'd like to hear is for more men to visit the doctor regularly.

“Men are more likely to have heart attacks than women, and it appears that the combination of hormones that men have makes them more susceptible to heart attacks than women,” Dixon said.
That's why screening is so important, he said.
“We can detect things that could potentially cause a heart attack years before they actually happen,” Dixon said.
“That includes getting your blood pressure checked regularly, getting your cholesterol checked regularly, making sure you don't have diabetes – all of which are really important in preventing heart disease in men.”
Other health issues that men face in particular can involve the prostate and male reproductive system, and then there's cancer, the most common of which are colorectal, lung and skin cancer.
“It's never too late to start going to the doctor. My patient was 65 years old and hadn't seen a doctor in 30 years. He came in after his first stroke. I wish he had been seen before the first one, and thankfully it wasn't that bad. We were able to get his blood pressure under control, check his cholesterol levels, and five years later he is a lot happier and in a lot better health,” Dixon said.
