Study: Sodium intake linked to severe eczema
A new study from the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health has found that sodium intake is associated with an increased risk of developing atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema.
The researchers looked at the sodium content of urine samples from around 215,000 UK adults aged 30 to 70. They found that for every gram of sodium intake per day, the risk of developing severe eczema increased by 11%.
“This study is interesting because sodium has recently been shown to accumulate in the skin and may help explain the link to inflammatory pathways in eczema,” said lead author Katrina Abuaballah, M.D., associate adjunct professor of epidemiology and a dermatologist at UCSF.
Atopic dermatitis is increasingly common in developed countries where fast food and high-salt snacks are plentiful, and the study, conducted in collaboration with UCSF, suggests that lifestyle factors such as diet may influence the incidence of the disease.
According to Dr. Abuaballah, most of the new treatments for eczema focus on alleviating the exacerbation of symptoms rather than addressing the underlying causes. These findings could play a pivotal role in fighting atopic dermatitis by offering patients an affordable way to treat eczema by reducing sodium intake in their diet.
It is well known that consuming too much salt increases the risk of high blood pressure and heart disease, but the role of salt in chronic inflammatory diseases such as atopic dermatitis has not been studied much.
This study, and continuing research investigating the link between sodium intake and skin diseases, will help patients be more careful to follow dietary guidelines for sodium intake.
“While it is not yet proven that reducing salt in the diet improves eczema, most Americans eat too much salt and can safely reduce their salt intake to recommended levels,” Abu-Aballah said.
