Rabies-infected bat found in Clay County prompts warning
KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KCTV) – Missouri health experts have issued a warning for people living in or visiting Clay County.
The county health department announced Friday that a bat found in the area tested positive for rabies. Health experts did not provide a timeline for when the bat was found but said it had “recently” tested positive for the virus.
Rabies is an infectious disease that spreads through the saliva of an infected animal. The infection is usually spread when the animal bites or scratches a person. Experts warn that bats have small teeth and may not leave obvious bite marks as a warning.
“It's important to remember to avoid contact with wildlife, especially bats and skunks, as they can carry rabies even if they don't appear sick,” Deputy Chief Ashley Wegner said.

Anyone who thinks they have been exposed to a rabid animal should see a doctor immediately because, if untreated, the infection is almost always fatal.
Health experts say families should make sure all pets have up-to-date rabies vaccinations. It's also important to keep a safe distance from wild animals and wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
Anyone who notices an animal behaving strangely is asked to contact an animal control officer.
