ADPH shares how to protect yourself and your pets after South Alabama woman was bitten by rabid fox
Escambia Co., Alabama (WBRC) — A south Alabama woman is recovering after being bitten by a rabid fox.
According to the Alabama Department of Public Health, the incident occurred while she was unloading groceries from her car, and the health department tested the animal, which tested positive for rabies.
Luckily, the woman caught it early: If left untreated, the virus can eventually travel to the brain and become fatal, according to state public health veterinarians.
Dr. Dee Jones said while attacks by rabid foxes are rare in Alabama, the disease remains a public health threat.
In our state, rabies is most commonly found in raccoons and bats, and a single bite can spread it to our pets and even us.
Jones says this is why it's important to follow state law and keep dogs, cats and ferrets up to date on rabies vaccinations.
“Here's a problem: Some people say, 'My cat never goes outside, he never leaves the house, so why should I get him vaccinated against rabies?' There are frequent reports of bats getting into homes. So no matter where you live, your pets could be exposed to animals that may have rabies.”
In addition to vaccinations, ADPH recommends keeping animals on a leash or in a fenced area, not leaving uneaten pet food or leftover food outside, and not keeping wild animals as pets.
If you are bitten by an animal, you should seek medical attention immediately, Dr. Jones says.
The health department will then have to investigate further to determine if it was rabies. Dr Jones said they investigate between 6,000 and 7,000 animal bite cases a year.
