First case of West Nile virus discovered in Michigan
LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Michigan's first human case of West Nile Virus has been confirmed in Livingston County.
Experts say there may be many more infected but simply unaware, and the only way to prevent the disease is to avoid mosquito bites.

Walker said record high temperatures, heavy rains and cool nighttime temperatures this summer have led to increased mosquito activity. “It's hard to tell Michiganders to avoid outdoor activities, but using insect repellent is a good idea, and making sure your window and door screens are in good repair to keep mosquitoes from getting inside,” Walker said.
Mosquito-borne diseases include Jamestown Canyon virus and Eastern equine encephalitis (Triple E), Walker said, and West Nile virus, which is also found in animals and is usually transmitted by birds.
