Restrictions on the movement of sheep and cattle have been introduced in two counties after more animals tested positive for the bluetongue virus.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) Restricted zones have been put in place around Norfolk and Suffolk..

“This means all keepers in these areas must act urgently now to prevent the disease spreading through their flocks and to stop it spreading further,” England's chief veterinary officer Christine Middlemiss said.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said keepers of cattle, sheep, camelids including llamas and alpacas and other ruminant animals must remain vigilant and follow any restrictions that apply to the movement of their animals.

Britain's chief veterinarian, Dr Christine Middlemiss, had previously warned that “thousands of cases” had occurred in the Netherlands and she feared infected blackflies could spread to England.

“Farmers are strongly advised not to move animals within the zone unless absolutely necessary,” Dr Middlemiss said.

“We have not taken this step lightly and it is clear that farmers and their veterinarians must remain vigilant and report any suspicions immediately to Animal Health Services.”

Bluetongue is spread by the bite of midges and can cause infertility and respiratory problems in sheep, cattle and goats, but does not affect people or food safety.

The virus was first detected on a farm near Hadiscoe, near Beccles, on Monday. A 20 km (12.4 mile) Temporary Control Zone (TCZ) was established..

The TCZ was extended on Wednesday after further cases were found, but by Friday animals in both counties had tested positive for the virus.

“Notifiable diseases”

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said in a statement: “We are committed to working with all those affected to support them to protect their own livestock and those of neighbouring farms, and will continue to keep the size and nature of the affected area under review as our understanding of the disease situation improves.”

“Bluetongue virus is a notifiable disease. Any suspicion of bluetongue virus infection in UK animals should be reported to the Animal and Plant Health Agency.”

A similar TCZ was put into place around a farm in Acle, Norfolk, last winter after a large number of animals tested positive. The restrictions were lifted in February.

November to March 126 cases of bluetongue reported across four English counties.

Of the cases, 119 were in cattle and seven in sheep, and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said the disease could be fatal to infected animals in “the most severe cases”.
