Colorectal cancer: Expanded testing saves lives

A woman who survived her bowel cancer because it was discovered early thanks to screening said that expanding the service to more people would “save lives”.

This comes after the Welsh Government announced that people over the age of 50 will automatically undergo a home bowel screening test.

Lowering the minimum age for the program by one year means thousands more people will be eligible for testing through their GP.

Health Minister Jeremy Miles said the measures aimed to “improve cancer outcomes” through early detection.

Andrea Weston, 65, from Swansea, was told she had stage 1 bowel cancer after undergoing a home test earlier this year.

Recognizing the disease early, she underwent surgery a month after her diagnosis and is already recovering.

“It blew up my world. I was devastated,” Weston said of when she first learned she had cancer.

“Everything happened quickly at the time and I had surgery in May.

“It's really, really important that people get tested because it literally saved my life.”

He added that extending the testing program was a “positive” step.

“At the end of the day, it also saves the NHS money because you don’t have to undergo treatment anymore.”

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in Wales, with around 2,400 people diagnosed each year.

Currently, the screening program provides self-screening kits to people aged 51 to 74 every two years.

This process involves a fecal immunochemical test that is sent for analysis to detect signs of colon cancer.

If detected early, it can be treated before symptoms appear, and tests can also detect polyps, which are non-cancerous growths, and can be removed to prevent cancer from developing in the first place.
