The US has seen an increase in avian flu cases, Ohio reports first human cases
Cincinnati (WKRC) – As Ohio is confirming the first human case of avian flu in Mercer County, residents are questioning how to protect themselves from illness. One common concern is whether bird feeders should be dropped to prevent the spread of the virus.
Dr. Stephen Bratt, who leads the infectious disease program at Trihealth Hospitals, “We've never seen H5 bird flu in humans so far, but we're keeping an eye on that,” he said, addressing the situation.
Dr. Bratt explained that hospitals are monitoring the virus by testing cases of severe flu. “We're trying to test all serious flu cases in hospitals. If they don't match the normal strain, we'll send it to our state lab and have them test for H5 bird flu,” he says. Ta.
It is considered safe to store bird feeders if you don't mind chicken, but it is recommended to keep pets like cats as a precaution. Residents should be wary of influenza-like symptoms associated with avian flu.
