What is tuberculosis? Waukeegan High School in the Chicago area is seeing cases of tuberculosis, the Lake County Health Department says
Chicago (WLS) – Officials say a case of tuberculosis occurred on the campus of freshmen/second-year students at Waukegan High School.
The Lake County Health Department said the person was recently diagnosed with active tuberculosis, also known as tuberculosis. Authorities have not said whether students or staff will be involved in the incident.

The school is being held at Waukegan High School this week after thorough cleaning over the past few days. It was late last week that they discovered active cases of tuberculosis in the school community. Since then, authorities have said they have taken all precautions to prevent it from spreading.
“Our focus is on preventing the school from spreading in our community,” said Chris Hoff, executive director of the Lake County Health Department.
Tuberculosis is considered a very serious disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the cause is a type of bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
It is one of the most deadly infectious diseases in the world, but rarely occurs in the US. It spreads into the air by coughing, sneezing, or even laughing.
People diagnosed with tuberculosis are isolated. The principal sent a note to his parents on Friday to explain the situation and what they were doing about it.
Students and staff identified as close contacts have already been notified individually via email with recommended actions. To respect privacy, ABC7 will not share any additional details.
As a precaution, schools have undergone the recommended cleaning procedures.
“We take that seriously and hope to work with the school to make sure people have the information and that parents are tested by their children,” Hoff said.
So far, the school knows only one person diagnosed with the disease. It is considered rare.
Last year there were only 353 cases statewide, of which 18 were in Lake County. There were 164 cases in Chicago. That all comes in under three cases for every 100,000 people.
Some people get infected with the Mycobacterium tuberculosis that has lived in the body for years without causing disease. This is known as inactive or latent TB.
Tuberculosis is treatable, but the earlier you are diagnosed, especially in schools, the more active or potentially, the faster you are diagnosed.
Signs and symptoms include coughing lasting for more than three weeks, blood and chest pain, chest pain, weakness, fatigue, weight loss, fever, chills, and sweat-sweat cough, according to the CDC.
“School, at work, where people spend a lot of time nearby. These are the environments we are concerned about, so we reach out to our students and our families,” Hoff said.
School and Health Department officials are working together to hold an information session Tuesday night. It is virtual for students, staff and parents to get more information about tuberculosis.
