Five nurses in one unit at Massachusetts Hospital
An investigation is underway at Massachusetts Hospital after multiple nurses on the same bed were diagnosed with brain tumors.
All five nurses work or work in a maternity unit on the fifth floor of the massive Brigham Newton Wellesley Hospital, according to a hospital statement provided to Today.com.
None of the tumors were cancerous. Two nurses had the same type of tumor, meningioma, while the other three had different types of tumors.
As part of the hospital's investigation, 11 staff members came forward to be interviewed, including five nurses diagnosed with brain tumors and six other nurses with unspecified “health concerns.”
“The investigation found no environmental risks that could be associated with brain tumor development,” the hospital said in a statement.
Another investigation, led by the Massachusetts Nurse Association, is ongoing, the group told Today.com. A spokesperson said he was contacted by more than 300 people, mostly current and former hospital employees, regarding the investigation. The group expects the survey could be “a few more weeks.”
“The hospital only spoke to a small number of nurses, and their environmental tests were not comprehensive,” the association's statement read in part. “We are currently unable to publish certain numbers or other diagnostic information, but we promise that we will be transparent about our findings when we have finished reviewing the information collected.”
The Massachusetts Nurse Association survey is being conducted by the group's Health and Safety department, in collaboration with nurses working in hospitals.
The Newton Welles Hospital investigation was conducted in accordance with the statement, along with the Department of Occupational Safety and Health, Officer Newton Wellesley, the Department of Radiation and Drug Safety, and other health and environmental experts.
“All staff who advanced were given the opportunity to be interviewed by the Occupational Safety and Health team to assess each diagnosis in the context of individual medical history and risk factors,” the hospital statement said. “A comprehensive environmental assessment following the CDC guidelines began in December to assess possible environmental exposures in the hospitals in that area.”
The survey included testing of hospital water and air quality, according to the hospital. Water in the facility is regularly tested, but additional test results are still pending. The air quality was found to be normal.
The survey also looked at the levels of radiation around the 5th floor and the pharmacy ventilation system, examining risks from X-ray use policies, construction, cleaning products, mold and pest control measures, but no issues were found.
“Based on these results, we can confidently reassure all patients with our dedicated team members at Mass General Brigham/Newton Wellesley Hospital that our facilities are free of environmental risks,” the hospital said in a statement. “As always, the health and well-being of our staff, clinicians and patients is our absolute top priority.
Newton Wellesley hospital staff will be discussing the issue at City Hall next week. NBC Boston reported.
