Guilds are seeking free flu vaccination programs at community pharmacies

Compared to the same period last year, about twice the flu cases already recorded in Victoria, the Victoria branch, the Australian pharmacy guild, is urging the state government to fund community pharmacies' free flu vaccination program.
“We are asking the state government to fund the ongoing free flu vaccination programme in community pharmacies,” said the Australian Pharmacy Guild, chairman of George Tambassis's Victoria Chapter.
“The free flu vaccine eliminates cost barriers for patients and provides access to affordable vaccines amid the cost crisis that all Victoria lives in.”
Behind Australia's most recorded flu season to date in 2024*, nearly 11,000 flu cases have already been recorded in Victoria in 2025** highlighting the urgent need for precautions.
“Influenza vaccinations are an important preventative health measure to protect people from flu contracts, and often lead to hospitalizations that put additional pressure on the already growing emergency department,” Tambasis said.
Community pharmacies are the most frequently accessed and accessible healthcare destinations, with the majority of Australians living within 2.5 kilometres of local pharmacies.
“Victoria has convenient access to local pharmacies to get flu vaccinations, so the guild is currently calling on the state government to remove the cost barriers for this and future flu season vaccinations.
“Funding the free flu vaccination program at community pharmacies will be a huge investment in all Victorian health,” Tambasis said.
