Smartphones can detect how drunk you are by analyzing your gait: Study-Sex and Relationships

In this study, saflet and colleagues recruited 22 adults aged 21 to 43. Volunteers came to the lab to receive enough mixed vodka drinks to bring the breath alcohol level to .20%. They spent an hour finishing alcohol.

The smartphone measured acceleration and medial-lateral (left and right), vertical (up and down), and forward and backward (forward and backward) movements as participants walked. At approximately 90% of the time, researchers could use gait changes to identify when participants’ breath alcohol levels exceeded the legal limit of .08% for driving in the United States.
“This controlled laboratory study has shown that our phone can help identify the “signature” of alcohol-related dysfunction,” Suffollet says.
Putting a smartphone on your waist doesn’t reflect how you actually hold your phone, but the research group plans to do more research while holding it in your pocket.
