Artificial pancreas controls diabetes in children 6 years and older, clinical trial show
Friday 28 August 2020 (HealthDay News): The artificial pancreas system is safe and effective in managing blood sugar levels in children up to age 6 with type 1 diabetes, according to a new study.
The system uses a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) to track blood glucose levels and an insulin pump to deliver insulin automatically when needed. This replaces your dependence on your fingertips or CGM with the delivery of insulin by injection or by a patient or caregiver controlled pump.
A clinical trial at four pediatric diabetes centers in the United States enrolled 101 children aged 6 to 13 with type 1 diabetes. One group used the artificial pancreas Control-IQ system and the “control group” used standard CGM and a separate insulin pump. The children were followed for 4 months.
Compared to the control group, the artificial pancreas group had 7% better in-range blood glucose control and 26% better night control.
Nighttime control is especially important for people with type 1 diabetes, as severe unchecked hypoglycemia (hypoglycemia) can cause seizures, coma, or even death.
Time in the overall range of patients using artificial pancreas was approximately 11% longer than in the control group. According to a survey released on August 26th, this translates into hours in the range of 2.6 hours more per day. New England Medical Journal..
This study was funded by the National Institute for Diabetes, Gastroenterology and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK).
