Parents protest vaccination against student flu in Massachusetts
BOSTON (WBZ)-Hundreds of parents gathered in Boston to protest against a new flu vaccination duty claiming that Massachusetts students constitute government support.
On Sunday, parents raised a sign and shouted out loud to protest their vaccination against freshman influenza outside the State Capitol in Boston. Earlier this month, state health officials announced that through the university, all six-month-old students would need to get the flu vaccine.
“We think it’s a complete government overkill, and we’re here to fight for all our children,” said one parent. “They don’t have to be vaccinated against the flu.”
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health states that mandatory flu vaccination is an important step in reducing the overall impact of influenza-related illness and respiratory illness during the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to MDPH, every child attending school, including public, private, and virtual learners, must receive a shot. The only people exempted are those with medical or religious reasons or who have a full home education.
But protesters say the government is overkill.
“They force us to inject into our children something we don’t agree with,” said parent Mike Megana.
Xavier Cordy (10 years old) and his mother Jennifer Cordy took part in the protest. They say they are not going to get the flu shot.
“I don’t like it because I don’t like getting into my body randomly without my consent,” Xavier said.
His mother says she is even thinking of educating her son at home unless the mission is reversed.
“I’ve been really stressed about it… but I’m not going to pressure them to get the flu shot,” she said. “I believe I should be able to choose what goes into my son’s body. I should be able to say “yes” or “no” and the government should not choose it. “
The deadline for provincial flu vaccinations this year is December 31st.
