FSU researchers develop new materials for making flexible X-ray detectors

Researchers at Florida State University have developed new materials that can be used to make flexible X-ray detectors that are less harmful to the environment and cheaper than existing technologies.

Biwu Ma, a professor at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemistry, is an X-ray scintillator that converts X-ray radiation into visible light and is a general type of X-ray detector. When I go to the dentist or the airport, I use a scintillator to take a picture of my teeth and scan my luggage.

Various materials have been used to make X-ray scintillators, but their manufacture can be difficult or expensive. Some recent developments have used lead-containing compounds, but lead toxicity can be a concern.

The horse team has found another solution. They used organomanganese halogen compounds to create scintillators that were free of lead and heavy metals. This compound can be used to make very good imaging powders and flexible composites that can be combined with polymers to be used as scintillators. Its flexibility opens up many potential uses for this technology.

“Researchers have created scintillators with a variety of compounds, but this technology offers a combination of low cost, high performance, and environmentally friendly materials,” Ma said. “Given the ability to create flexible scintillators, it’s a promising way to explore.”

Ma recently received a GAP Commercialization Investment Program grant from the FSU office of Vice President of Research to develop this technology. Grants help faculty turn research into feasible products.
