Researchers have shown that robots can measure vital signs such as a person’s temperature and respiratory rate from a distance. What is this robot?
Called Spot, this robot was developed by Boston Dynamics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It is controlled by a handheld device and can walk on four legs like a dog. How does the robot make these measurements?
The robot is equipped with four cameras. One is infrared and three are monochrome.
Body temperature: An infrared camera measures the skin temperature on the face. The algorithm correlates facial skin temperature with core body temperature.
Breathing rate: When a patient wearing the mask breathes, the breathing changes the temperature of the mask. An infrared camera measures this temperature change and allows the researcher to calculate the respiratory rate.
Pulse rate and oxygen level: When hemoglobin combines with oxygen and flows through the blood vessels, it changes color slightly. These changes are measured using three monochrome cameras that filter light at three different wavelengths (670, 810, 880 nanometers). Using these measurements, the algorithm calculates pulse rate and blood oxygen saturation.
How useful is Covid-19?
Researchers said that in the triage area, where suspected cases of Covid-19 are gathering, piloting a robot where the patient is sitting can avoid putting health care workers at risk. The robot can also carry a tablet, allowing the doctor to ask the patient for symptoms even when not in the same room.
In the long run, researchers suggest that these robots may be deployed in the hospital room.
