Net bullying can occur during lockdown, but parents can stop it
Wednesday, September 02, 2020 (HealthDay News)-Net bullying is less common among teens who feel loved and supported by their parents, a new study shows.
The findings may be particularly relevant during the coronavirus pandemic, the New York University team says.
“There are more opportunities for online bullying because distance learning has replaced classroom instruction for many young people, and mobile phones and social media represent face-to-face interactions with friends,” the study author said. Laura Grunin says. She is a PhD student at Rory Meyers College of Nursing in NYU in New York City.
“Because of the high unemployment rate and more parents working at home, there are also new family movements and stress factors at home,” she added in a college news release.
In this study, based on 2009 and 2010 surveys, Grunin and her team analyzed responses from more than 12,600 youths aged 11 to 15 Americans. The children were asked about their bullying behavior and their relationship with their parents.
The results show that the more adolescents consider their parents to be affectionate, the less likely they are to cyberbully.
Those who say their parents “love little” are more likely to be engaged in at least 6 times higher levels of online bullying than those who say their parents “almost always” love. I will.
Other types of emotional support, such as how much adolescents felt their parents felt helped and understood, also affected the behavior of online bullying, the researchers said.

According to Grunin, the findings point out the importance of emotional support from parents.
