First West Nile activity in La Salle County registered on September 3
Ottawa mosquitoes tested positive for the West Nile virus — this year, the first West Nile virus activity took place in La Salle County.
Mosquitoes were collected on September 3, and environmental health staff conducted a mosquito confirmation test in the health room.

Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headaches, and muscle aches. Symptoms may last for days to weeks.
However, 4 out of 5 people infected with West Nile virus do not show symptoms. Rarely, serious illnesses can occur, including meningitis, encephalitis, and even death.
People over the age of 60 and those with weakened immune systems are at increased risk of severe West Nile virus.
West Nile virus surveillance includes tests for mosquito batches, crow carcasses, blue jays, and robin, as well as tests for humans with West Nile-like symptoms. Anyone observing a sick or dying crow, blue jay, or robin should contact the health department to determine if the bird will be picked up for inspection.
