Virus cases surge in Kansas University town
Manhattan, Kansas (AP) — The number of active coronavirus cases in the Kansas State University area has skyrocketed by more than 400% since classes resumed in mid-August.
Manhattan Mercury reported on Sunday that the number of cases in Active Riley County on August 17 increased from 125 on August 17 (the first day of class) to 679 on Friday.
Cumulative case counts in Riley County increased from 500 to 1,174 at the same time period, up 135%.
The newspaper reported that the local health department declared the outbreak in three fraternity groups, six female student clubs, and a college football team. There are 20 active cases in one fraternity.
The Riley County Department of Health has revoked permission for all September events at Sorority and Friendship Clubs.
According to the Kansas City Star, at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, students will strike on Labor Day and pressure the university to close the campus. The newspaper reported that there were 546 confirmed cases at college as of Thursday.
Jayhawker Liberation Front posted on Twitter and asked students not to attend face-to-face or online classes on Monday.
Student council leaders said on a strike, “We will send a solid message to the government that our lives are not their consumables. We are not the only way they can make money. .”
