Yorkshire scholars say that if Covid-19 death overwhelms local services, “potential for mass burial”

According to scholars at Huddersfield University, death and bereavement services will be overwhelming if 1% of Covid-19 contractors die.

Significant increases in mortality, coupled with staff absences, have struggled to issue certificates of death and warn that it will become a bottleneck for funerals and bottled funerals.

Limited space in the cemetery can also be a big problem, with the potential for mass graves.

But researchers acknowledge that this is “very controversial, confusing and upsetting many communities.”

It began work at a temporary morgue at Birmingham Airport, with space to accommodate up to 12,000 bodies in the worst case scenario during the outbreak of Covid-19.

The airport is next to the National Exhibition Center (NEC) in Birmingham and is already being mobilized as a temporary field hospital candidate site.

Dr Julia Meathon, Anna Williams, and author of the dissertation, Researcher Helen Mary Kruger, investigated the ability of local authorities in northern England to manage excessive deaths due to pandemics.

The survey was conducted in 2019 and has been updated to reflect the current potential outbreak scenarios.

With a population of about 500,000, authorities perform about 3,000 incinerations and 500 burials annually.

Under normal circumstances, municipalities have a processing capacity of 120 per week and can process up to 60 death certificates per day.

According to the authors’ analysis, hundreds of services in the region exceed their processing capacity each week, based on a 1% overall mortality rate.

They wrote: “The impact of such an increase from normal levels would mean that authorities would have difficulty maintaining registration and disposal of deaths that would have potentially serious consequences Would.

“In practice, if you register for death or fail to obtain a death certificate, you will not be able to take action.

“The bottleneck of burial and cremation occurs, and capacity is buried beyond capacity, causing delays in ceremonies.

“Families may be blocked from closing their bank accounts, selling pensions, property, or receiving insurance, which could have an economic impact.”

They identify the most relevant issues as staff shortages, material shortages, body storage, graveyard space, and the unknown rate at which body and registration requests reach service.

One worker interviewed by researchers said, “Indeed, in some of the graveyards, we may eventually return to mass graves, depending on the amount of excess death.”

Workers in the morgue expressed concerns about the storage space for the mortuary, stating that the army would have to be called in the event of a flood during a pandemic.

Researchers continued: “In a pandemic situation, there is likely to be a necessary change to the” business as usual “death and bereavement management service.

“How these are managed humanely is very important to those affected during the crisis, and the human nature of the government’s response reflects the nature and values ​​of our society, I ’ll make that decision. ”

One option they outline is that the service prepares for the worst case scenario. This scenario can be reduced according to the expected mortality.

You may also need to surround your employees to be called during periods of severe staff shortages.

An online death registration service can be developed to speed up the process, but the author warns that this could be exploited with insufficient safeguards.
