Contra Costa County’s Vector Management District calls on residents to take precautions against West Nile virus

Contra Costa County, California. — This week, Contra Costa County officials urged residents to take precautions against the West Nile virus after two sentinel chickens and three more dead birds tested positive for the virus.

So far this year, 11 pairs of mosquitoes, 15 dead birds, and 2 sentry chickens have been positive for the virus in Contra Costa County.

So far, most of West Nile virus activity has been seen in the eastern part of the county, but one of the three recently discovered dead birds lived in Concord, Contra Costa Mosquito & Vector Control District officials said.

“The first positive bird of the year was from Martinez. Now it’s a bird from Concord, and it’s an important memory that the West Nile virus isn’t confined to just part of Contra Costa County,” said the district. Science Program Director Steve Schutz said.

Two people in the county have been diagnosed with the virus so far this year, according to the state’s public health service.

Since 2005, 70 people in Contra Costa County have been diagnosed with West Nile virus. In 2006, two people died of the disease.

When an infected mosquito bites a chicken, the chicken is considered a sentinel because the bird naturally resists the virus and produces antibodies that are detected in the laboratory.

Both of the chickens recently discovered by the virus were from Holland Tract, East Contra Costa County.

It is known that some infected birds, especially crows and jays, get sick and die of the disease.

When a mosquito is bitten by an infected bird, the mosquito becomes infected and can be bitten by the mosquito and infect another bird or person with the virus.

Residents are advised to take precautions to reduce the risk of mosquito bites. The virus infection lasts for more than a week until the average overnight temperature drops below 55 degrees Celsius.

As insects develop from eggs to adults in water, residents can reduce the risk of the virus by discarding or draining normal water. Repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or lemon eucalyptus oil are recommended.

Up to one million mosquitoes can grow in a single abandoned pool, affecting people living miles away, according to district officials.

Residents are also advised to avoid outdoors, usually at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are present.
