Samin Sedghi Zadeh, 29, Cremona

Zadeh has been working at a hospital in the heavily damaged city of Cremona in the north for the past two weeks. He left his comfortable job as a private sector general practitioner after the government sought emergency assistance from health professionals.

“A year before I graduated, I promised to help myself in the face of a crisis,” he said. “The closure in office comfort has not helped this national emergency.”

Zade’s family is from Iran, and an 80-year-old grandmother has survived the outbreak alone.

He says that Iran’s response to emergencies is weaker than Italy’s, but that Western countries should have been ready.

“We were all very arrogant that this was only a Chinese issue,” Zadeh said.

“I didn’t think this was our problem in Western countries,” he said, “instead, we’re trying to do our best at field hospitals.”

Zade said that Italy has one of the best healthcare systems in the world, but hopes to learn some lessons from the crisis.

“When things return to normal, there is a lack of memory,” he said. “I hope that as a young Italian, students will invest more in the healthcare system.”

Pini graduated from Parma University in Northern Italy last year. However, after failing to secure her residence in Italy, she was forced to move to nearby Switzerland for work.

Like many recent graduates, she jumped at the opportunity to support countries working on pandemics.

“I spent my whole life doing this job,” she said. “I did not get married, lived to study.”

Pini currently works in local and Cremona hospitals.
