CDC says they can carry Salmonella

This year’s amazing threat to public health, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is currently investigating the outbreak of Salmonella among people hugging pet hedgehogs and bearded dragons.

Outbreaks associated with pet hedgehogs have affected 32 people in 17 states. Five people were hospitalized. Sixteen of the 23 sick people interviewed said they had contacted their pet hedgehog before they became ill.

- Items used to care for pets should be cleaned outdoors if possible. If you need to clean the room indoors, use a laundry sink or tub and immediately disinfect the area thoroughly.
- Infants are more likely to have severe Salmonella disease, so do not allow children under the age of 5 to touch either animal.
