They appear to have helped Liam, a 23-year-old student who lost 70-80% of his left ear hearing after a Covid-19 infection.

Liam was infected with Covid-19 in June, had a fever and a headache, and was exhausted for several weeks. After he began to feel better, he suddenly lost his hearing, tinnitus, or ringing in the air.

After a round of steroids, he said he could now hear everything but the treble. Ringing continued, and his doctor told him that it might not go away, he said.

“That’s really scary,” said Liam, who asked his surname not to be used to protect his privacy.

Steroids did not work with Harel. She said doctors were unlikely to return hearing to her right ear and would soon be wearing hearing aids. The tinnitus in that ear may not stop.

Harrell looks back on how she got infected with Covid-19. A friend visited me in late June. She said they spent most of their time outside.

The friend called a few days later and said he was exposed to someone from Covid-19.

Harrell, 42, said her husband and children also tested positive for the virus. Her husband was squeezed for several days and the 9 and 10 year olds were asymptomatic.

“I wasn’t ill, but there were still results,” she said. “I hope people get the message that this is not a joke.”
