Incidence of COVID in Middleton Prison reduced from 137 to 15
next Coronavirus Officials said Thursday that there are currently 15 active cases following the 137 highs in Middleton Prison and Correctional Office.
According to Essex County Sheriff Kevin Copinger, the increase in incidents at the facility began on September 22, leading to institutional testing of all prisoners, employees and vendors.
Of the approximately 1,700 tests conducted between October 3 and 6, 137 inmates were positive. Currently, 15 cases remain, the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. There were two other positive cases confirmed those days before the test.
According to the statement, more than 72% of those who tested positive were asymptomatic and the rest had mild symptoms. The prisoner is not hospitalized.
According to the sheriff’s department, prisoners who tested positive were transferred to one containment unit to isolate the spread of the virus.
“We used the test as a research tool to identify positive cases and isolate virus carriers. Once positive cases were identified, healthcare provider WellPath monitors and cares for each person daily. WellPath has determined which cases have been medically cleared according to guidelines set by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the State Public Health Service. These guidelines indicate that as long as there are no symptoms and the fever is resolved 24 hours before the 10th day without the use of antipyretics, clinical recovery is considered 10 days after the positive test.
No positive cases were found among prisoners at other facilities in the agency, the Essex Prerelease and Reentry Center in Lawrence, and the Women’s Transition Program in Salisbury.
According to the statement, visits to Middleton Prison and Orthodontic Hospital have been temporarily suspended.
