Women in Central Texas openly share the fight for breast cancer in the hope of inspiring others
(KWTX)-A woman in Central Texas fighting the most advanced form of breast cancer in need of lifelong care openly tells her story online to inspire others and encourage early detection. I’m sharing.
Alison Sawley, 39, was diagnosed in August 2019 and immediately created an online Instagram and Facebook page called “My OpenCancer Story.”
“I was 38 years old and was diagnosed with stage 2 invasive ductal carcinoma. This was later proven by scans and tests to be stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. It’s my blood. Moved through to my liver, and it was very rare. I heard the word incurable, quality of life. “
Although metastatic breast cancer is an incurable disease, maintenance, infusions, daily medications, and regular monitoring enable a quality of life. This is exactly what Alison is doing now. Learn to live forever with breast cancer.
Alison first found a lump in her left breast while taking a shower and was immediately seen by her doctor in early July, when she suspected a cyst and Alison had health insurance. I didn’t.
“I didn’t have insurance at the time and it was so expensive that I didn’t rush to get a mammogram or ultrasound,” she said.
Where Alison calls “God,” she has landed a new job at an advocacy center for crime victims and children, including health insurance.
In August, she underwent mammograms and ultrasonography and found cancer.
Within weeks of her diagnosis, she had begun the first round of six rounds of chemotherapy.
Alison has been a longtime volunteer of the American Cancer Society and has long chaired the Society’s charity fashion show.
She saw the patient walk on the stage, never expecting to participate in her journey.
But as soon as Alison was diagnosed, she became an “open book” and was good at sharing good and bad points, highs and lows to educate women and men.
“When I was diagnosed, I thought I needed to share my story. I’m not the best writer. I’m going to flab writing things. I sometimes spoil I’m going. I’ll be too emotional at times, but I’ll be real and I’ll call it “my open gun story.”
Allison has documented it all. From the first chemotherapy she wore a cute dress and make-up and laughed with her aunt who accompanied her, to the tears of the camera during the day when she felt hopeless, the uncertain future worries, and the horrific hair loss.
Her mission was to help others, but Alison says she has been similarly blessed along the way.
“When I felt too much a week and went too mentally, if it made sense, there were others there to pray,” she said.
“The support system is unique. The first thing I said was that everyone was fighting, so it was said that they were inspired by people they had never met. “
Alison is doing a stable scan today and her doctor says there is no current evidence of active illness, but due to the nature of her cancer, she will be treated for life.
Alison is pleased to be given the opportunity to share her story on a larger platform in October.
