SARS-CoV-2 cannot penetrate the cornea of the eye, studies show
A new study by researchers at the University of Washington School of Medicine revealed that the cornea of the eye resists SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Other viruses, such as herpes simplex and Zika virus, have been shown to affect the cornea. However, the coronavirus cannot replicate itself here.
Researchers have yet to determine whether other tissues in and around the cornea remain unaffected, according to findings published in the journal Cell Reports.

Lead author Jonathan J. Minor said: “Our findings do not prove that all corneas are resistant. However, all donor corneas we tested were resistant to the new coronavirus.
