The CDC seems to shorten the quarantine guidelines, scientists say the move makes sense
Madison, Wisconsin (WKOW)-The director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said it was likely to shorten recommendations on how long people exposed to COVID-19 would be quarantined.
Currently, people are to be quarantined for 14 days after exposure, but a new recommendation could be 7-10 days of quarantine with a negative COVID-19 test.
Dr. Ajay Seti, an infectious disease expert at UW-Madison, said the change was logical.
“The CDC is optimizing the length of the quarantine so that it fits a little better with science,” he said.
According to data, 99% of people who are exposed to the virus and develop symptoms do so within 14 days, according to Seti. That’s how scientists came up with the first quarantine period.
“It’s conservative,” Setty said. “It’s cautious.”
However, 50% of people who develop symptoms develop within 5 days, and 97.5% develop symptoms within 11.5 days after exposure.
According to Sethi, this data shows that shorter quarantines may be more effective as long as the quarantine is negative.
“If you test negative 7-10 days after that high-risk exposure, it’s very unlikely that you’ll be tested positive if the tests are repeated,” Seti said.
He said the shorter the quarantine period, the easier it would be for people to comply and the spread of the virus could be even lower.
“Shortening from 7 to 10 days is much more attractive to people, and as more people try to quarantine … it’s more effective in controlling viruses in the population.” Said Sethi.
Sethi said the changes to the guidelines were not unexpected, as scientists learned more about the virus and the CDC revised its recommendations several times throughout the pandemic.
He warned that the short quarantine period was good news, but not a signal that he could give up following other pandemic precautions.
If someone tests positive for COVID-19 after several days of quarantine, the shortened timeline does not apply.
