Missouri plans to vaccinate health care workers with coronavirus vaccine within a few weeks
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services plans to send 340,000 coronavirus vaccines to essential healthcare professionals by the end of this month, Randall Williams said Friday afternoon.
Federal Warp Speed operations are likely to ship Moderna and Pfizer vaccines to the health sector in the coming weeks, Williams said.
This dose is sufficient to vaccinate nearly 60% of healthcare workers, caregiver residents, and staff that the state has identified as a top priority for vaccination.
That said, the first vaccination could reach the Missourians by the end of the year, Williams said.
“Everyone who gets vaccinated is one step closer,” Williams said. “That is our mission.”
Other members of the administration of Williams and Governor Mike Parson have stated that the distribution and administration of vaccines is one of the top priorities for mitigating the Missouri virus. The person does not issue state-wide mask instructions and shutdowns.
However, vaccine shipments depend on the two vaccines approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. The developers of both vaccines said the tests showed that they were more than 90% effective. The FDA needs to review these findings.
The other two drug developers, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson, are in the late stages of vaccination development. Williams hopes that their vaccine will be available in early spring.
He said these vaccines could be given to the second highest priority, including teachers, child care providers, and first responders.
“In February, there could be 3 million people who need to be vaccinated with four vaccines. You can imagine their logistics,” Williams said. He said the National Guard could help distribute the vaccine.
Williams said he hopes to have “mass vaccinations” at drive-through clinics, pharmacies, gymnasiums and government-run clinics by May 1.
“By July or August, I think anyone who wants a vaccine in Missouri will be vaccinated,” he said.
Both Moderna and Pfizer vaccines need to be given multiple times. The federal government has confirmed that Missouri has a supply to send a second dose after the first dose has been used. If someone receives the Moderna vaccine on the first dose, they will also receive the Moderna vaccine on the second dose, he said.
Michael Kinch, vice president of the University of Washington, said the state’s timeline is realistic. He praised the state’s decision to vaccinate health care workers first.
“When you ask what is the most vulnerable and riskiest group, it is exactly that group that is announced. [in the first tier]”Doctors and the elderly,” said Professor Kinch of Radiation Oncology, who studies drug development.
However, he said, it is likely that the virus is most prevalent in the twenties.

Ultimately, he said, that means the pandemic will last for months until 2021.
