New record-breaking COVID-19 cases and inpatients reported in South Carolina | National
Columbia, South Carolina — The State Department of Health and Environment, South Carolina, identified more than 4,000 new cases of COVID-19 for the first time on Sunday.
In addition, health officials said the number of coronavirus patients admitted to South Carolina reached a record high.
In addition to 4,370 new positive tests, DHEC reported 14 more deaths on Sunday. Health officials said the reported data included some additional cases and deaths from December 24th and Christmas Day.
Since the test began in March, 273,659 coronaviruses and 4,764 deaths have been reported in South Carolina.
According to DHEC, Sunday’s data was based on 18,600 tests with a positive rate of 23.5%. This is an increase from 21.6% on Saturday, but the 26% rate on December 18 was the highest in months.
A record high daily total was set on December 18, with 3,648 new cases on that day. The total number of positive tests for COVID-19 on Saturday was 3,111, and a few days earlier, on December 23, DHEC confirmed 3,599 new cases. Prior to the December surge, there were 2,343 records for the past day confirmed on July 18.
Sunday dates back to November 16th, when DHEC reported a new case of 981 for 41 consecutive days with more than 1,000 positive tests in South Carolina. Health officials report more than 3,000 cases six times a day, and data show that more than 2,000 positive tests were confirmed in 23 of the last 24 days.
On Saturday, 74 deaths were reported by DHEC. According to the New York Times, most of the deaths reported on the 1st in South Carolina occurred on July 25, when 80 deaths were confirmed.
Which county was affected?
The number of COVID-19 cases in the northern state continues to grow exponentially, with the newest case occurring on Sunday in the region.
According to DHEC, Greenville led all counties with 897 new COVID-19 cases, followed by another 412 in Spartanberg County.
According to DHEC data, the number of COVID-19 cases in Midland is below the number of upstates, but has skyrocketed in recent weeks. Richland County reported 228 new cases and Lexington County reported 308 new cases.
This brings the number of confirmed cases in Richland County to 23,381 and reports 14,348 positive tests in Lexington County.
According to DHEC, more than 100 positive tests were confirmed on Sunday in the other seven counties. This includes Holly (260), Florence (248), York (209), Anderson (198), Charleston (148), Pickens (140) and Beaufort (122).
Of the 14 deaths reported on Sunday, all were elderly (65+), including one in Lexington County, according to DHEC. The remaining elderly deaths reported on Sunday occurred in the counties of Greenville (4), Spartanberg (2), Barnwell, Beaufort, Cherokee, Cherokee, Fairfield, Holly and Pickens.
COVID-19 caused the greatest damage to the elderly in South Carolina.
The average age of all South Carolina residents who died from coronavirus complications was 75 years, and the majority (87%) of those who died were over 60 years.
Overall, 311 coronavirus-related deaths have been reported in Richland County and increased to 251 in Lexington County, according to DHEC.
What is the trend of COVID-19 in SC?
The daily case rate has almost doubled in the past month and is now the highest ever, with 44 per 100,000 people tested positive for the new coronavirus in the last 30 days.
According to DHEC, COVID-19 hospitalizations have exceeded 1,000 cases across the state in the last three weeks.
The number of people tested across the state has skyrocketed over the past 30 days, with an average of 222 tests per 100,000 last month, up 40% from the previous month.
Overall, 3,571,920 tests were conducted in South Carolina.
DHEC said it would not report daily COVID-19 numbers on New Year’s Day. The data for that day will be provided in the next day’s report.
How are hospitals affected?
The number of people hospitalized for COVID-19, which has been steadily increasing over the past month, reached a record high of 1,780 throughout the state on Sunday.
According to DHEC, COVID-19 hospitalization previously peaked at 1,723 on July 23.
According to the data, coronavirus cases accounted for 23% of all inpatients reported in South Carolina on Sunday.
Nearly 20.5% of COVID-19 patients, or 365, are in the intensive care unit, and nearly 9.9%, or 177, are on ventilator.
Of the 13,210 beds available in South Carolina, 7,729 inpatient beds or 70.4% are currently occupied, health officials said. According to DHEC, 1,245 of the 1,691 ICU beds are currently occupied, accounting for 73.6%.
The total bed occupancy rate in hospitals and the bed occupancy rate in the ICU have remained close to 80% since early December.
Last week, five Upstate Health Centers reported that the ICU had expanded to near capacity. Prisma Health doctors said Monday that the number of COVID-19 patients at the four Midlands Hospitals in the system had increased by about 50% since Thanksgiving, but still has sufficient capacity and resources.
Data show that Richland County occupies 647 beds (61.5%), 405 are available, and 394 (78%) of the 505 beds in Lexington County are occupied.
Are all cases considered?
Health experts across the country said the official number of cases is likely to significantly underestimate the number of cases. At some point, South Carolina officials estimated that 86% of infected people had never been tested or diagnosed, but no longer provide those estimates.
DHEC also records possible cases and possible deaths. A possible case is someone who has not received lab test results but has a positive viral symptom or antibody test. A potential death is a person who has not undergone a lab test but whose death certificate lists COVID-19 as the cause or cause of death.
On Sunday, DHE C reported no new possible cases of COVID-19 in the state and two new possible deaths. This brings the total estimated number of cases to 22,520 and the estimated total number of deaths to 391.
