The dead came from all over the state, with two dead from Cass County and one from Burley, Morton, Ramsey, Williams, Mackenzie, Hettinger, and Stark counties. A man in Grand Forks County, who died in his 50s, was significantly younger than the average age of people who died of the virus in North Dakota.

Thursday’s report marked the second consecutive day with an increase in active cases, but over the last half of last month, active COVID-19 cases plummeted from a peak of over 10,000 on November 13. Currently, 1,889 people in North Dakota are known to be infected with the virus, an increase of 68 from Wednesday. With the decline in the past few weeks, cases of active virus in North Dakota are hovering near the lowest point since early September, when the state was still in the early stages of the fall surge.

According to the Ministry of Health, 1,292 people have died from COVID-19 in North Dakota since March. The state killed an average of nearly eight people a day in December, down from November, when North Dakota killed an average of more than 16 people a day. However, during the pandemic process, the state has the fourth highest number of deaths per capita. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention..

Viral deaths tend to be indicators of delayed outbreaks, with 233 deaths recorded last month, making December the third most deadly pandemic month in North Dakota.

At least 768 of the state’s deaths occur in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. There are 50 infected nursing home residents in the state, a decrease of more than 300 since the beginning of the month.

Hospitalizations due to the virus have also been significantly eliminated, and the number has decreased by more than 200 since mid-November. On Thursday, the number of North Dakota hospitalizations for COVID-19 fell by two from the previous day, and this week the state fell below 100 virus hospitalizations for the first time since September.

The department reported 303 new cases on Thursday, including:

  • 81 from Cass County, including Fargo.
  • 27 from Burleigh County, including Bismarck.
  • 31 people from Ward County, including Minot.
  • 20 from Grand Forks County.

Approximately 3.86% of the 7,859 residents tested as part of the latest batch received positive results, with an average positive rate of approximately 4.5% for residents tested in the last two weeks. Seventy-four of Thursday’s positives came from a new 15-minute test, but the state has not yet reported the number of residents who tested negative on the rapid antigen test.

Healthcare workers began receiving the first dose of the newly released COVID-19 vaccine in early December, and vaccination at state nursing homes began this week. As of Tuesday, December 29, North Dakota had been vaccinated more than 13,000 times, with nearly 12,000 more.
