Gibby Harris: Charlotte’s COVID-19 Field Hospital No Plans
While Samaritan’s Purse has opened a COVID-19 field hospital in Lenoir, Health Director Gibby Harris said there are no plans to open it in Mecklenburg County.
Charlotte, North Carolina-Mecklenburg County Health Director Gibby Harris said Thursday that the county has just begun to see an increase in COVID-19 cases and is expected to increase further by mid-February.
Harris said in a statement at a virtual press conference that he had no plans to establish a field hospital for coronavirus patients in Mecklenburg County. She told county officials that Atrium Health had assured them that they could cope with the surge in new cases.
“They are said to be able to handle the situation and there is no reason to avoid going to the hospital when needed,” Harris told reporters. She said she had been vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine.
Harris said she wasn’t a front-line worker in need of the vaccine, but the county “did not want to waste” the available vaccine and injected her. Harris said he hadn’t experienced any side effects other than mild pain since the vaccination.

The field hospital is located in the Caldwell UNC Healthcare parking lot in Lenoir and serves the Catawba Valley Health System, Caldwell UNC Health Care, Appalachian Regional Healthcare System, Carolinas Healthcare System Blue Ridge, and Frye Regional Medical Center.
Laura Easton, president of Caldwell UNC, said the field hospital opened at the perfect time as Foothills experienced a surge in COVID-19 cases.
“There are a lot of staff here and we can see the hope that was fled a few weeks ago in their eyes,” Easton said at the opening ceremony.
Samaritan’s Purse previously built a field hospital for COVID-19 patients in northern Italy, the Bahamas, and New York City. Nonprofits will begin building a field hospital in Los Angeles County next week.
