San Antonio — February is American Heart Month, a time to look at the signs and symptoms of heart disease.
It is even more important for women to seek symptom care during a pandemic. Reason: People with heart disease are at increased risk of complications from COVID-19, and many of the symptoms are duplicated.

So what can women do to reduce their risk of getting heart disease?
“Diet and exercise are very important,” Hui said. “It can help prevent heart disease, and many heart diseases can be prevented with lifestyle changes.”
It is also important for women to remember the greatest risk factors for heart disease, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, family history, obesity, diabetes and smoking.
“If women are smoking, quitting or reducing smoking can be very helpful,” Hui added.
Doctors who know all of this are beginning to discover heart disease in women earlier than before.
“Thanks to initiatives such as the American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women campaign and such public education departments, young women are being diagnosed and treated more successfully.”
Hui also says that stress is a major factor in heart disease. Women should try to reduce stress by means other than drinking and smoking.
