USPSTF Promotes Prediabetes, T2DM Screens for Overweight Adults-Consumer Health News
Tuesday, March 16, 2021 (HealthDay News)-The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) screens prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in overweight or obese adults aged 35 to 70 years and prevents prediabetes. Referrals to specific interventions are recommended. These recommendations form the basis for a draft recommendation statement published online on March 16th.
Daniel E. Jonas, an evidence-based practice center at the Research Triangle Park at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and colleagues collaborate with a lineage of 89 publications to investigate the benefits and harms of screening for abnormal blood glucose levels. Review was conducted. Intervention for type 2 diabetes and prediabetes and type 2 diabetes detected on the screen. Researchers found that screening-detected diabetes did not improve mortality or other outcomes in a 5-year and 10-year follow-up study. The intervention improved the health of recently diagnosed diabetes over a period of 10 to 20 years. Interventions were associated with a reduced incidence of diabetes and an improved intermediate outcome in obese or overweight people with prediabetes.
Based on these findings, the USPSTF states that there is a moderate net benefit in screening for prediabetes or type 2 diabetes and providing or referencing effective prophylactic interventions to patients with prediabetes. We conclude with a degree of certainty. These findings apply to adults aged 35-70 years in a primary care environment who are overweight or obese and have no diabetic symptoms (B recommended).
