Two New York cats are coronavirus positive
According to officials, some animals may be infected by the virus from humans, but there is no indication that the animals are spreading the virus to humans.
Federal officials announced Wednesday that two pet cats in New York had a positive response to the coronavirus, marking the first confirmed case in a companion animal.
According to the US Department of Agriculture and the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cats with mild respiratory illness and potential recovery are believed to have transmitted the virus to family members and neighbors.
This finding, which was the result of a positive test in seven Bronx Zoo tigers and lions, adds to the small number of confirmed virus cases in animals worldwide. Although some animals appear to be capable of being transmitted by humans to the virus, US officials say there are no indications that animals are transmitting the virus to humans.
“We don’t want people to panic. We don’t want people to be afraid of pets,” said Dr. Casey Barton Behravesh, an employee of CDC working on the relationship between human and animal health. “There is no evidence that pets play a role in spreading this disease to people.”
Still, the CDC encourages people to prevent pets from interacting with people and animals outside the home, for example by keeping cats indoors and dogs out of dog parks.
Dr. Jane Rooney of the USDA does not recommend coronavirus testing of pets unless the animal is exposed to COVID-19 individuals and the animal has symptoms of the disease. Veterinarians who believe the test is justified should contact the state authorities to make the decision.
Barton Behravesh said animal testing was conducted at the Veterinary Laboratory and uses different chemicals than human testing, which was lacking during the crisis.
For most people, the coronavirus clears mild or moderate symptoms such as fever and cough in a few weeks. For some people, especially the elderly and people, it can cause more serious illnesses, including pneumonia, and can be fatal.
The two cats live in different parts of the state. USDA and CDC do not mention the specific location.
The first cat became ill about a week after a person in the household had a short-term respiratory illness, but the person’s illness was not confirmed to be COVID-19, according to Burton Beravesh. . The animals sometimes went out outdoors and may have come in contact with infected people in the area, she said.
A second cat owner had tested positive for COVID-19 before the cat became ill, officials said. Another cat in the same house shows no signs of illness.
The agency recommends that COVID-19 pet owners avoid contact with animals as much as possible, such as keeping, snuggling, or covering their faces while caring for them.
Outside the United States, there are several reports of pet dogs and cats becoming infected after intimate contact with contagious people. This includes Hong Kong dogs that were positive for low levels of pathogens in February and early March. Agricultural officials in Hong Kong have concluded that pet dogs and cats were unable to infect humans with the virus, but could be positive if exposed to their owners.
The Bronx Zoo tiger had what was believed to be the first confirmed case of a coronavirus in an American animal or tiger somewhere. A four-year-old Malatera named Nadia began to show signs of illness on March 27, 11 days after the zoo was closed due to the virus.
The other three tigers and three lions later showed symptoms. Everything is recovering.
A zoo official said he believed the virus had been infected by the virus, but was exposed by one or more zookeepers who had no symptoms at the time.
