Two-thirds needing ventilation die from critical care

London: A study of critical care outcomes kills two-thirds of Covid-19 patients who require advanced respiratory support with intensive care.

The numbers are from the National Center for Intensive Care Research (ICNARC) and are based on a sample of 6,720 patients with severe coronavirus.

Of the 4,078 patients with known outcomes, the study found that about 2,067 died while 2011 were discharged.

This mortality rate of 50.7% for all people receiving intensive care was slightly lower than ICNARC’s final report in early April, with a mortality rate of 51.6%. Less than two-thirds of those who needed advanced respiratory support, known as invasive ventilation, died.

Data show that 1,744 people (65.4%) died after requiring mechanical ventilation for emergency medical care, and about 923 (34.6%) who received the same treatment were discharged. For people who require basic respiratory support, such as oxygen through a face mask, known as non-invasive ventilation, 894 patients (81.9%) recovered and about 198 (18.1%) recovered.
