There were 57 new cases in Douglas County and no new COVID-19 cases in Oregon. Coronavirus
COVID-19 cases in Douglas County remained 24 with no new cases after a positive test for those declared as recovered at noon on Saturday returned on Friday. It broke the 14th consecutive streak without a case reported in the county.
Eighteen out of 24 positive cases have recovered, and there are six active cases in the county. One is still hospitalized. No deaths have been reported from this disease, according to the Douglas Public Health Network. A total of 1,159 people in the county were negative.
The reported Oregon Department of Health currently has 57 new cases of 2,635 infected people.
Five new deaths were recorded in the state, killing a total of 109 people who died at COVID-19.
County health officials say there are two types of COVID-19 tests available to county residents—nasal swabs and antibody tests.
Dr. Bob Dannenhoffer, a county public health officer, is looking for RNA (ribonucleic acid) of the virus in which nasal swabs live in the body, and identifies and diagnoses confirmed active cases of COVID-19. It is the only way to do it.
The Nasal Swab Test, used in the Drive-Through Clinic, is a test ordered by health care providers to confirm cases of COVID-19.
The antibody test is a blood test to see if someone has antibodies to the coronavirus in their blood. In other words, I hope I’m sick and immune.
“The testing is done in an external lab. This is a blood draw and it takes two days for the results to be returned,” Dannenhoffer said.
Quest Diagnostics handles most tests, but also runs some swab tests.
Dannenhoffer said a positive antibody test did not confirm infection, and antibody positivity does not guarantee immunity to COVID-19.
Dannenhofer said nine people, including some workers at the Shutter Creek correctional facility living in Douglas County, were tested Saturday at a drive-through clinic in Reedsport. These results should come back later this week.
There were 21 Shatter Creek after the prisoners were transferred and tested positive. Two detained employees and 19 adults tested positive.
