US, Iraq team up to kill 15 ISIS members in early morning raid, US military says

A joint operation by U.S. and Iraqi forces has killed 15 members of the Islamic State group in western Iraq, the U.S. military said.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) tweeted Friday that in the early hours of Thursday, Aug. 29, U.S. and Iraqi forces killed 15 ISIS members. The operatives were “armed with multiple weapons, grenades, and explosive belts,” the agency said.

At least seven U.S. service members were injured in the raid, five during one part of the operation and two more during a second segment of the operation.

A US defense official told Fox News Digital: “During the operation, five US personnel were injured. One of them was evacuated for further treatment. Two other US personnel were injured as a result of falls during the operation, and one of them was also evacuated out of theater for follow-up care. All personnel are in stable condition.”

The US military said there were no civilian casualties during the operation.

“ISIS remains a threat to the region, our allies, and our homeland. U.S. CENTCOM, alongside our coalition and Iraqi partners, will continue to aggressively pursue these terrorists,” they added.

Thursday's raid comes about a week after U.S. forces killed a senior leader of an al-Qaeda-affiliated militant group in Syria.

The agency said Abu Abdul Makki, a senior leader of the Horas al-Din (Guardians of Religion) group, was killed in a “kinetic strike.” It said Makki was “responsible for overseeing terrorist operations from Syria.”
