Meteor over Massachusetts sparks reports of booms in US, Canada | Meteors

A meteor over Massachusetts over the weekend eventually led to reports of explosions and sightings across New England to Canada.

The American Meteor Society said the meteor in question was about 3 feet wide when it entered the atmosphere around New Hampshire’s border with Massachusetts, north of Boston.

Officials with the US space agency NASA confirmed that the meteor was a natural material, not a satellite or space debris – and that it entered the atmosphere on Saturday at 2:06 p.m.

Robert Lunsford, the American Meteor Society’s program manager, said the group received dozens of reports from Delaware to Montreal of people hearing a double boom, feeling the ground shaking or seeing the fireball — which he said looked like a shooting star in the daytime sky.

The double boom reportedly shook buildings across Massachusetts to Rhode Island. An onboard camera in New York captured the meteor streaking across the sky.

“It was definitely bigger than a normal fireball, about a meter wide,” he said.

But Lunsford said it was unlikely the meteor would hit the ground.

“We would need more information about the trajectory, speed and other aspects to know for sure whether it hit the ground – but if it hadn’t burned, it would have landed in the ocean,” he said. “Most of them burn before they hit the ground. »

A NASA spokesman, Allard Beutel, said the meteor was traveling at about 75,000 mph (120,700 km/h) and probably broke up about 40 miles (60 km) above the ground.

Meteors travel faster than the speed of sound, creating pressure waves as they burn and disintegrate in the atmosphere. This can produce a loud sonic boom that those on the ground can hear.

NASA estimated that the energy released during the meteor’s disintegration on Saturday was equivalent to around 300 tonnes of TNT, which explains the explosions.

In a handful of states, residents posted on social media that they felt the buildings they were in shaking. Several videos on the X platform captured what looked like two rapid booms, without fire, smoke or other visual cause.

Several people filed reports with the U.S. Geological Survey, recording the shaking felt with the National Earthquake Information Center, agency spokesman Steve Sobie confirmed.

The agency opened an event page, based on the number of “Did you feel it?” reports he received on his website. But Sobie said no events were recorded on the agency’s seismographs, meaning the shaking was not due to an earthquake.
