Scientists have succeeded in identifying a post-infection treatment for coronavirus disease (Covid-19) and demonstrating its effectiveness in blocking viral replication in mice.

The study, published in the National Academy of Sciences journal Proceedings, showed that animal models infected with coronavirus and treated with inhibitors of protease enzymes significantly increased survival and reduced pulmonary viral load. The communications company PTI reported.

The researchers said their team modified the GC376 using a tool called deuteration to test its effectiveness against SARS-CoV-2. Treatment with deuterated mutants starting 24 hours after infection significantly increased mouse survival compared to untreated mice.

The results suggested that the deuterated mutant has excellent potential as an antiviral agent against SARS-CoV-2, they said.

“Treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infected mice with dehydrogenated GC376 significantly improved survival, viral replication in the lungs, and weight loss, demonstrating the effectiveness of antiviral compounds,” Kansas said. State University professor Chang Kyung-ok said.

“The results suggest that deuterated GC376 has potential for further development, and this deuteration method can be used in other antiviral compounds to produce potent inhibitors,” Chang said. He added.
