Docs find that men with low testosterone levels are more likely to die of coronavirus – The Sun
Studies show that men with low testosterone levels are more likely to die of coronavirus.
According to the figures, men are twice as likely to die as women, but experts have not been able to determine why.

Now German researchers say that male sex hormones may have the answer.
Testosterone is important in how the male body controls various immune responses, such as fighting viral infections, but females produce small amounts in the ovaries.
Scientists analyzed hormone levels in the first 45 confirmed Covid-19 patients who received intensive care at the University of Hamburg Eppendorf Medical Center.
This included 35 men and 10 women, of whom 9 men and 3 women later died.
Samples were taken from each patient and tested for 12 hormones, including testosterone and dihydrotestosterone.
Lowdown
They found that over two-thirds of male patients (68.6%) had low levels of testosterone.
And 60 percent of female patients had elevated testosterone levels.
Experts say that low levels of testosterone cannot control the immune response in men, but for women, high levels of testosterone are associated with a more important inflammatory response.
Professor Gülsah Gabriel of the Leibniz Institute of Experimental Virology, Hamburg, who was involved in this research, MailOnline“Most of the men with Covid-19 had low testosterone levels.
“The majority of these male Covid-19 patients who died also had low testosterone levels.
“Therefore, low testosterone levels in men appear to be a risk factor for the outcome of severe and fatal disease in men infected with the so-called” cytokine-induced “respiratory virus. “
Cytokine storm
SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for Covid-19, has been shown to stimulate the body to overproduce cytokines. Cytokines try to kill the pathogen by flooding the infected site.
However, in Covid-19 patients, the immune system may react too aggressively, leaving the process out of control-known as the cytokine storm.
This overreaction by the body can lead to severe lung damage, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and even death.
